HighBall Halloween 2017: Projection Installation

TreesLarge.gif

This project consists of a sculptural installation designed to create an immersive environment in which simple three dimensional shapes (square columns) are used as a projection surface. The piece becomes a location for viewers to have virtual experiences. The possible environments are endless. They could be, for example, a dark enchanted forest, an alien landscape, or a more playful haunted house. We envision festival goers coming together within the environment for shared experiences, perhaps acting out their characters as well as taking pictures and posting them on social media.

The structured consists of sixteen 18" by 18” square large columns that are 10' tall, placed in front of a three walled backdrop.  The participant can explore the installation by walking through and in between the columns. Each column will have projection mapped video on all four sides so what they see and experience changes based on their position and the direction they face. We're excited about the potential for optical illusion, lenticular motion, environmental landscapes, and iconic imagery being used together. The sculpture itself will be eye-catching and beautiful, attracting the viewer to interact while being mystifying.

The design is based off of a stage truss system, in which all of the columns are attached to each other and work as a single structural unit. This type of structure is incredibly strong and stable, while remaining simple in it's construction. We will be working with, civil engineer, William O’Hara from JMKW Development in finalizing our structural design.

Pulse is a modular 3d sculpture created by OBLSK, that captures the pulse of Columbus, Ohio. Patterns found in the city’s sounds and textures are translated into light and color, which play on the surfaces of 3 floating triangular pyramids. Through video projection, Pulse comes alive as a glowing prism of energy, revealing the rhythm of the heart of Columbus. OBLSK is a group of artists based in Columbus, Ohio who create powerful multisensory media experiences and creative marketing through video, projection, interactive art and technology, costume and set design, storytelling, graphic design, and more. Special Thanks to Greater Columbus Arts Council, CoverMyMeds, ZenGenius, The Cultural Arts Center, and Capital University Sound Engineering Students.
